Vainley Gazing At His Own Reflection by 30pics4jackiesdiamond

Vainley Gazing At His Own Reflection

We had a tour of Winchester Cathedral and the tour guide kindly took us down to the flooded crypt. Some of you may recall my disappointment in November when there was only a puddle to be seen.

The sculture is looking into cupped hands, which when the crypt floods hold water and refllect the face.

The statue was donated by the artist as he thought the flooded crypt would be enhanced by his figure (Gormley really is the vainest of artists!!)
The sculpture must be feeling real pleased 😀😀.

It's quite eerie. By his posture the statue could be looking at a mobile phone.

He might be vain, but he's good. This is an interesting scene and folks must be taken aback when first seeing the sculpture.

@salza i saw an invisible cell phone as well. Perhaps all artists have a touch of vanity. I love the contrast of the grey figure with the yellowish stone.

Love the reflections. The style of this Gormley statue is so different to those at Lake Ballard in our goldfields.

I love the reflections.

Did you see the Gormley exhibition at the Royal Academy? It showed his true breadth of invention - and sense of humour too - and quite changed my opinion of him!

that man's going to catch the ague if he doesn't get off the water!

@30pics4jackiesdiamond The statues at Lake Ballad are based on the nude forms of 50 odd locals. They suit the area but are quite “different”. It’s worth a “Google”.
