Of the two of us, he's the one with the cooking skills.
It's a rare night when dinner comes off the stove in the kitchen; Ken prepares the main course almost every evening. And he prefers charcoal to a propane grill. Before he retired, I was coming up alone for several summers, so I set out to buy him a Weber BBQ like he uses in California. Try as I might, I could only find propane grills. Since it wasn't a prompt necessity, I played a waiting game until at last I found one Weber for sale and promptly bought it.
While yesterday was a blue-sky day, the weather changes fast here and today is more typical of the weather we can have up here. Now we understand why most people use propane grills!
LOL! Now that's dedication! I'm so jealous that you guys get to grill... we have a co-op apartment, and our city doesn't allow grills of any type on balconies. But the jerks who live across the street are allowed to grill on top of the parking garage. How unfair! ;-)
I love it! Living in the Pacific NW, I have had many a BBQ in the rainy weather...This is true dedication to the grill. What a trooper!
Thank you for your lovely comment on my raindrops from yesterday. We had sun for a few hours again today, then an absolute downpour this evening!
Hahaha!! Loving that, Louise!!! Ken reminds me of my father-in-law, who can't live without his hot tub, and when it's raining goes in there with an umbrella!! ;-) My husband loves grilling, too, and usually he prepares the main meal while I chop up the salad and whip up the dessert! Propane is definitely not the same as charcoal! However, you are right, the weather sometimes determines the bbq tools. But, not in Ken's case! :-)
Thank you so much for your sweet note from last night! 365-fixated - loved that phrase! ;-) I am addicted to our photo world, and drug-pushers we may be, but I want to spread the word and make more people join our paralel universe ;-))
P.S. Bon apeti! I am sure the fish will be delicious!
So you need an extra umbrella for the grill . you too have a husband that likes to cook. mine does all the cooking and sometimes baking too. i only cook my special recipes that come from my part of Germany
like for instance sweet sour green beans...a main dish with smoked meat, fresh green beans and green pears....absolutely delicious. or sourkraut (called Sauerkraut in German) cooked with some fennel and on top a layer of back pork ribs .. i bake this in the oven and when it is almost done i take the lid off so the meat browns on top... serve it with what we call salzkartoffeln (potatoes cook in water with salt added) . of course not to forget my red cabbage dish. it simmers for hours on the stove. the ingredients are as follows: red cabbage cut into small pieces, as much apples diced as cabbage and as much onions (what a combination] add just a bit oil to kind of brown the cabbage, add cinnamon, brown sugar and a little bit of vinegar (not too much) and by constantly turning it over and over let simmer for 2-2 1/2 hours. this makes a nice sidedish for meats, turkey, porkchops or even hamburger meatloaf. we eat is hot, cold it tastes good too. i could go on and on but i guess this is not the right time for it.
As if you haven't had enough of me here i'm again. wanted to comment on your comment, ha that sounds funny, yes regarding the cardinal. isn't he gorgeous. mrs. cardinal hasn't been around lately i think she might be protecting her nest. as to blue jays.. let me tell you
we have so many windows that we can watch our bird feeders - 6 by now -from inside. most of the pictures except for the one with the robin's nest were taken through a window. now the blue jay is another cattle of fish. he comes in like a storm picks one seed and leaves the same way ..so it's hard to catch him. when i see him and get the camera up he is already gone again. so i took the camera, focused on the spot where i expect him to go and waited for him and then i took shot after shot after shot. i hope you have better luck catching him. oh and btw have you seen the collage i uploaded on the 4th i believe that was the date - i had an unused space there and didn't want to lose it so i uploaded a picture collage of a National Baseball Game between the Blue Jays and A's if you are interested it took place in Toronto at the Rogers Center (formerly known as the famous SKY DOME).. i like that name better but Rogers Communication took over.
A HERO to all men....NEVER GIVE UP!!! I Love it Louise!!!! I actually did this a few days ago (grilled dinner in a rain storm) and thought it would have made a good photo. Thanks for making it a reality!
Louise, your sweet comment made my heart melt!!! Thank you so much for your kind words! You are so nice!!! I am looking forward to your little notes, too ,and I was so happy to share today's news with my big 365-family! Our nephews are so adorable, and I am sure this baby boy will be a perfect addition to the family! :-)
I have to admit that I do have a slight accent, which occasionally gives me away. The other day a lady in the store almost guessed where I am from (first she said Russia, then she went with Macedonia), which doesn't happen often here. A lot of people don't even know where Bulgaria is! Staying in the USA has improved my English immensely, and, yes, back home I did study for an English teacher and translator. I am really flattered that you enjoy my comments! Sometimes I still have to google a word or two, or ask for the meaning, but everybody wants me in their team when we play Mad Gab ;-))
Have a wonderful evening, too!! Лека нощ!! (Good night in Bulgarian) :-)
Yes, well....grilling is so worth it, rain or shine! Especially since that means the hubby is the one doing the cooking...gives us ladies a break, doesn't it, heh heh! Besides, grilled food is just yummier!
He looks like a very patient Grill Master. Hope the weather gets better. We had rain yesterday and tomorrow it's supposed to be 80! I will send a few degrees up north.
That's how we FREQUENTLY do a barbecue.... I remember last year the men were doing the cooking under umbrellas and one of the kids was "runner".... adds to memories and fun... even if the food is a bit cold!! In Ireland you just can't let the weather dictate what you do or you'd stay in bed for most of the year!
I am so glad you found the Weber! They are rare there and our friends from Kentville have it on their list for there next trip to visit. My husband broke down last weekend and got a gas grill but not for steak! Only chicken, sausages etc. I would love some Lunenburg sausage on the grill...oh, my! Have some for me!
Yum, I love a good barbecue! There is nothing quite like the smoky smell of charcoal-cooked food. And I think it's so great that he's doing it in the rain with a little umbrella to cover him.
And, thank you for the warm welcome! I'm with you - I like most of my thinking to be while I'm behind the lens, and not while I'm at the computer. It may mean we can't achieve the same things as others can, but frankly. I didn't come here to hone my photoshop skills - and don't get me wrong, there are some talented photographers out here who make their photos look even more phenomenal with a bit of creative editing. But I came to build my photography skills from scratch, just using the camera and little else. i hope I hold out for the other 346 days that await me!
i knew you had the bigger umbrella!!!! ken gets big points for grilling, and then a lot more by giving you the bigger umbrella =)
only here in canada (i think) can one experience winter, spring, summer and fall in one week. it's craaaazy! my brothers, sister and i had a bbq party 2 weeks ago at our parents' house (which is like a ten-minute walk away from mine) when they went to san francisco for the weekend and it snowed. yes, it snowed. craaaazy, crazy. we had to play games to decide who's going to grill outside.
fantastic job keeping us up to date with your vacation, louise. feels like we're there, too.
Just looked again at the picture and that's the same barbecue that I have! Works a treat. Will be taking it to church on Sunday afternoon for a Pentecost Picnic in the Park. All the churches gather at our place (we have the best grounds) and after a short service in the open air we eat and chat and the kids get to play on a bouncy castle. Fun.
Lucky you having a husband that likes doing the cooking,my husband only likes cooking on the barbecue and thats not very often with our english summers , have to get him a large brolly!
Ken is such a good sport :o)!!!!!!!! Sounds like you two are settling in nicely! Thanks for the kind words-we are so proud! Hannah plans to join the marching band and maybe the jazz band, too. She is very excited about it all :o)
hehehe you had me laughing at your last comment. :) (truth be told.. I didn't have anything to post for the day and I had taken that picture to show my hubby... normally he is the fly swatter, but I wanted to show him that I had skills too.... ) :)
Ha ha! Brilliant photo, and I love that Ken didnt give up because of rain! I love BBQ's (even tho am a veggie, lol).
Great shot of the every day, made me smile a big smile :-)
We have very changeable weather in the UK so this is a common scene! Good for you that lovely Ken grills for you. I can do it but my hubby enjoys it & hard for me to get in there! Enjoy your yummy food!
ahhh i love the raindrops in this photo and the way he looks like he's in his element despite it raining! whenever i see bbq's like that i can't help but think of the movie "Dennis the menace"... watch out for balls of paint being sent from vacuum cleaners onto the bbq!
thank you for the comment ... the tape recorder will hopefully turn up a few more times yet! :D going to be another challenge to keep it interesting with it!
what a nice photo of Ken doing the bbq! we are almost in the same situation, my husband is the better cook in the house, it's his passion! aren't we lucky? hehehe...
Louise, you lucky girl (though I know Clark is just as lucky to have such a warm, friendly woman as you in his life for all these years) ....my comment below is really for Clark...please share:
Hey, Clark! I love a man who takes control of the grill ;-)
CALF UPDATE - I just talked to Pat (the real farmer) and he said that sometimes the cow hides the calf so well, it might be 3-7 days before we see it again. The pasture where they are is not that big, and the grass is not too tall, but I'll take him at his word and just keep an eye out. So - maybe it is OK after all.
