When you step onto Prince Edward Island, the specter of *Everything Anne* is everywhere, often in a very cliche way. But it wasn't until we visited Cavendish, where Lucy Maud Montgomery (L.M.M.), "Anne of Green Gables" author was raised, that I found the authentic Anne come to life. We first visited the bookstore, run by the great great great grandson of Alexander & Lucy MacNeill who raised L.M.M. He has a home on the property, as do his grandparents, John & Jennie MacNeill who, in their 80's, still tend the gardens (lower right). A nice-looking man with smiling blue eyes (lower left), he gave us a history of his cousin's life there, and how she'd submitted "Anne..." five times before it was accepted for publication. We walked the gorgeous property and all it's points of interest from Lucy's childhood home, through "the haunted woods" and to the green gabled house of her friends, large and beautifully furnished (upper right). In the woods, I photographed a number of little squirrels and a chipmunk, but in the interest of variety, I'll forgo those this time. I've found it interesting that a number of people leaving comments have shared a fondness for the writings of L.M.M. so for those who do, I hope you'll enjoy these few pictures.
I posted several photos today of our Thanksgiving holiday in P.E.I. It was such a memorable trip, but I'm still most excited about seeing and photographing the fox!
OH! I would love to see this place at least once in my life. I remember when the original movie came out that when I watched it, I was told I looked like Anne-spelled-with-an-e Shirley. I had the hair and the temper to go with it.
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! I looooooove Anne of Green Gables! I used to pretend I was her and spend hours in my back yard lost in my own Green Gables world. Thank you for sharing these!
Coolness! Thanks for sharing!! You know it was watching things like Anne of Green Gables, The Life and Times of Grizzly Adams, The Waltons and Lassie that made this Aussie chick fall in love with Canada and the US!
I loved Anne of Green Gables!! My grandmother used to lovingly refer to me as a towheaded Anne Shirley. This is such a wonderful post, Louise. You struck a golden chord with Anne lovers. :)
@mozette I'll take that to heart as I'm feeling down as our last 48 hours here (in NS) wind to a close. I know there'll be much to look forward to once I've closed the door here for the last time on Friday morning!
I loved that book when I was younger. Matter of fact still have my copy that I got from my godparents sometime back in the 70's so thanks very much for sharing!
"Will you please call me Cordelia?" she said eagerly.
"CALL you Cordelia? Is that your name?"
"No-o-o, it's not exactly my name, but I would love to be called Cordelia. It's such a perfectly elegant name."
No surprise to everyone who knows me --- I so loved, and identified with, Anne [with an "e"]. I really envy you. I've always wanted to vist there. Thank you for sharing the photos and re-viving my memories.
This is the place that I want to see someday at PEI. I really like enjoy seeing these authors come to life. Thank you...thank you for sharing these with me. The collage is perfect.
Awesome collage, really captures the spirit of PEI and all things Anne. I've been bugging my husband all week about how much I want to visit this place someday because of your pictures :)
@mommablogsalot I'm really touched; thank you for the nice compliment! I just got off the phone with my daughter in Chicago, and she was recalling how much she had enjoyed her trip here, too, long before we traveled to PEI. Be sure to let me know when you make that trip!
I'm sooooo jealous! Anne of Green Gables was the first book I ever bought myself with my own money. It's now a well-read book and I have the whole series. I even emailed someone on the island when I couldn't find the last missing book in my collection (turns out that we call "Anne of Windy Poplars" "Anne of Windy Willows.") Anyway, P.E.I. is one of the places I most want to visit in the world, purely because of those books, so thank you for sharing this.
