Our trip to Cape Breton wouldn't have been complete without a visit to Louisbourg (Louisburg in the present day). It's an amazing site with costumed re-enactors (animators) bringing it to life. I got hundreds of wonderful photos of the people, and the setting that transports you back through time.
"The Fortress of Louisbourg is the largest reconstruction project in North America. The original settlement was founded in 1713 by the French and developed over several decades into a thriving center for fishing and trade. Fortified against the threat of British invasion during the turbulent time of empire-building, Louisbourg was besieged twice before finally being destroyed in the 1760s. The site lay untouched until well into modern times, when archaeologists began to reconstruct the fortress as it was in the 18th century."
As there wouldn't have been photographs from the early 1700s, I tried to make my photo look more like a painting... (seen best in the enlargement).
Oh how i love Louisburg and have some great shots from there. I can still remember my daughter (about 6) dancing in the street and eating at the tavern with the big spoons. this shot is wonderful. fAV
@sailingmusic So delighted to know we share the same memory! There was a large group of children in costume, learning to be "animators"! They were in the tavern eating when I encountered them...what a sight, all in their little costumes! What a wonderful place! Thanks for the fave!
Louise....Hi! Linda finally got me into 365!! And I have almost the same exact photo of Louisbourg! (Except that it drizzled the day we were there!) John and I still talk about our visit with you and Ken two summers ago when we toured the Maritimes/Atlantic Provinces. Such an awesome trip,
