After breakfast with friends this morning, we were driving back to town on that road across the grass... An array of beautifully crafted wooden toys filled a number of tables and I asked Ken to turn around so we could have a look. In brief, the very nice man who made everything, used to have a shop in town, but closed up & now sells "come by chance". His work was amazing...many pieces were for "kids at heart", too beautifully made for small hands. The prices were so reasonable, I asked him to explain. He loves making these items and needs to move them along, so he tries to cover his costs... He said he used to keep a world map in the store so people could leave a pin where the toys were headed. When he gleaned we were from California, he said an actor had bought one of his items and took it back to that coast. We bought a gorgeous 5-pc train set and a set of blocks that are not leaving Lunenburg in our lifetime. I foresee our grandkids looking forward to playing with it all when they come up for a visit! They can leave the electronics at home!
@hbdaly Yes!...and I tagged this "so NOT California", Land of Disney Princesses & Plastic Magic! I know I shouldn't be so cynical, but this place is more in keeping with my childhood memories...and maybe I can leave some for the grand kids!
What a wonderful story. Hand crafted what a joy to find them. I agree with leaving the electronics at home! They take up way too much time, but maybe I'm showing my age!!! Fav
What a wonderful find! I love the handmade wooden toys! I think it's so different from most places these days with all the electronics like ipads and X boxes etc. Lovely shot!
Oh that is so neat Louise. They do have a certain quality about them. Just last week after the crew finished insulating our attic, I was up moving some boxes around and came upon a box of our Son's trucks, the years before electronics, and some of them were filled with figurines. I think you did well with your purchase and the little ones will enjoy playing
What a wonderful fine - both the creator and the creations. Imagine you had an interesting visit. I like his philosophy. These are just beautiful. Wish more kids were able to enjoy them. I still remember Lincoln logs being one of my favorite things to play with.
@pyrrhula Oh yes, Ferry! This man is a craftsman and artist like you! I'll send you some more photos of his work. He sat in a chair as his grand daughters played around him and we made our selections; such a nice man he was and SO talented!
@Weezilou Thanks for the replay. There is one more reason . I started with making this. As a kid, not so good and beautiful as his but I remember we make cars while we were very very young. +/- 10 years old. My first toys.
@pyrrhula I was telling my daughter, Ashley, about this, and she says she thinks today's children need to learn about some of the old ways, put away the electronic items and learn to not always feel entitled. Makes me proud that I must have raised her right that she feels that way! I'll post pictures while the boys are here and send some one day soon of the toys. Some of them were very simple designs, but pleasing to look at. Thank you for your reply!
Thank you for you frank comment. An even bigger thanks for you confidence and calling me you friend. I`m very honourable and pleased with it. I `ll write you as soon as you are settle at you new place and can spent the time to read. Let me know.
Amazing handmade toys....love things like that! I would not mind asking him to make me some buildings, you know, a few architectural landmarks! What a great find!
Great story, Louise. I'm still trying to figure out a way to head over that way next month. I'd love to haul a hand made toy back to California on my bike!
