Of the many types of "Gifts" we may have been given when we are born, my gift is not exactly being "musical", but I can remember words, and multiple verses, tunes and the names of most songs you care to ask me to recall. (I'm not much good with it after about 1970, however). Someone says something, and I've got a song that leaps to mind...weird! So here are some Valentine's Day tunes for you to remember..I could have gone on and on! I leave you with a wonderful quote I came across recently...
"With the right music we either forget everything or remember everything..."
Happy Valentine's Day to you, My Funny Valentine! xoxxx ♥
You gave yourself a great assignment and performed admirably. I am just like you. I used to drive my kids crazy; they would say something, and I would immediately respond with a musical phrase or an entire song.
Love your little raccoon and his hearts!
Happy Valentine's Day to you, sweet friend!! I was not given the gift of music, either, but I am OK with it since I got more than my share of the visual gifts!! This is a wonderful Valentine's card, and of course, it would not be complete without a cute animal! ;-))))
holy mac! we are the same when it comes to songs, and yeah, after 1980 unless it was a really good song, that's my expiry date! i see something and a song goes in my head instantly. and you know, the songs i know were not necessarily the ones you guys are familiar with here. and there are songs i know the lyrics of but not necessarily the tune. sadly, there are no more articulate song writers. most songs today are one line, three lines at the most and there are only five notes and the rest, they yell or kept repeating like ella, ella ella ella ella ella! okay, you got me started. hahahaha! there was one time partner and i went for an intimate fine dining at this rather high end italian restaurant in downtown toronto. when i went to the ladies' room there was a "music" in their piped in music and the lyrics i heard went like this: "yo, your whore sent a text on my mobile and she said ..something something something..and she wants to s*** my d***! my pee practically halted at hearing this and when i was done (sorry i'm laughing as i type this, and sorry for that rather graphic description) i went to the manager and told him that they shouldn't be playing such songs. he said a name that i neither could understand nor remember now but it was supposed to be a grammy-winning "artiste". so i told him the wordings i heard and he said, he's never "really noticed' it because the music was really excellent. i said "its one of those raps! it's not music!" well, apparently, that's his generation's music. definitely not coming back to that restaurant with "that music!" nice card. now, let's carry on. :-)
@summerfield Oh dear friend...you miss the crooners, too, I can tell! I am *so in your court* about the crap the young generation is being fed...it's tragic and a travesty! While, from an early age, I loved and learned everything I heard from the Gay 90's, Roaring 20's, War Songs, musicals, and everything in between. Of course my mother was appalled when I was mad for rock'n'roll...thought it was a phase and I'd never listen to it when I was grown. Well, haha! I segued and loved folk music in the 60s but began to tune out when Heavy Metal came on the scene. Like you, a song from a movie or musical (so many good musicals!) embeds itself in the present, but when I want something to listen to, it's the oldies...and sometimes the *really* oldies! (On a cruise last year, I had a nice young piano performer learn "I'll Be Seeing You" and "We'll Meet Again"...good songs when traveling and meeting people, soon to say good-bye. He loved them so much, they became part of his repertoire. All is not lost...one young soul was saved ;-) xo darlin' and Happy Valentine's Day!
@eyesmile The flavor of chocolate is actually, as I write, lingering in my mouth after a rack-of-lamb dinner that Ken prepared! I'll be washing that all down with the last of my glass of champagne...not your-typical day to day meal! So..'twas good...an excellent day...and I hope yours was as well. not rushing back home and all!
We've hit a common bond with the tune naming! I have a huge collection of sheet music, too from way back when. This was so cleverly put together.....I can't even imagine how you did it but it's a fav! Reading your post to @summerfield, this could have been me talking....LOL! "I'll be seeing you" and "My Funny Valentine" are among my top 10 favorite tunes.
@cimes1 - i remember being in a dance at school and my then bf and first love was singing to my ear "the way you look tonight" and we were dancing to a different music which i couldn't remember. hahaha!
in 2004 when my sister and i went on a cruise, we discovered quite belatedly a 'name that tune' contest at the lounges. we just slew everyone for the last three days we were on. some group was cocky enough to challenge us with music and movies. just between my sister (6 years younger so she's in an entirely other 'generation') and myself we got 49 out of 50 songs even the musicians couldn't believe it. we grew up with beautiful music with lyrics that had beautiful meanings and messages.
@summerfield "oh, but you're lovely with that smile so warm ...." LOL, I'll be turning this into a "name that tune" board which actually I participated in during the early 90s for about 5 yrs.
@francoise@cimes1@summerfield I couldn't agree with you more, Francoise! This link has nailed a common bond amongst us all and it's been more like getting actual letters from friends! A delight, all of you! @gilbertwood and then Denise sent these *wonderful words* and it's not a song I'm familiar with I'm sorry to say! Is it an Australian song? I'll look that one up...it really strikes a chord! Thanks! ...and thanks to all of you for making this thread of comments so interesting!
@Weezilou - i never liked kenny rogers but it's from one of his songs 'sweet music man'. the only kenny rogers song i really really love and is a favourite and wouldn't want anyone else to sing but him is "someone who cares" from the movie "fools". here, have a listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vRK3iHnhxU
Definitely agree with you about the 19th. Went to see the Rambert ballet on Friday and they were performing to the Rolling Stones music LittLe Red Rooster, Lady Jane etc and have just re watched it on You Tube. Brilliant Oh and I do like your shot
@Weezilou@summerfield It's from Sweet music man by Kenny Rogers as Summerfield mentioned I'm not a big fan of him but had 40 years of listening to him! Louise, there are 3 of us on 365 too that have barters over songs regularly and it's a lot of fun :)
I agree, Weezi, that this has been a wonderfully entertaining discussion. Your photo is excellent. I figured I would add to the mix that I sing Barbershop with a group 15-20 women every Monday evening. Makes me happy! :)
@voiceprintz Oh, my dear little friend...you are the most wonderfully multi-layered individual, revealing small bits over time...always something new to anticipate while waiting for the next surprise! I'm always the happy audience member with the wide smile across my face, loving every minute and appreciating every note!
As an aside, knowing you have theatre links, has Kneehigh's production of "Tristan & Yseult" played in Chicago? Just saw it this evening and it was amazing/magical! The production hails from Cornwall...if you love live theatre, watch for it and don't miss it! I suspect you'd love it!
Weezi, I'm not sure if that's played or will play in Chicago but, will now, keep my eyes open for it. Thanks for the tip.
As for the rest, what fun/good would there be in putting everything all out there all at once? Like a good drama, it's best to build the characters and excitement over time, don't you think? ;) Better yet...for me on 365...they're also spread across many places and spaces. I believe that only adds to the mystery.

You travel the world with a six piece band :)
