In earlier days, when people still wrote letters, did not type... When a stamp made everything meaningful. 2 cents... January 1931 I read - unbelievable.
Beautiful is the handwriting on this card. Written with a pen. Who has such an elegant and cultured handwriting today...
@jerome@jyokota Oh, Dear Jerome and Junko! This all resonates with me because I'm that person who still writes letters to my family and friends! My cursive turned into printing, but I love to write, and I like to write about subjects that are more story-telling than the expedient dashings we send off in email. I love that I'm writing to both of you here as, Jerome, I've told you in the past that I'm in awe of how eloquently you write with deep, insightful thoughts, and English isn't your first language! Junko, your education and principle interest is all about writing! It troubles me that children might no longer be learning cursive in the classroom as they may never be able to real the old letters and first drafts of books by famous authors! I save and scan all these things so as not to destroy them, but to use them in some fashion and keep the history they contain. I have few letters from family, but I buy whatever I can find to read and use. Jerome, the envelope behind the letter is postmarked 1902...and in conversation with a friend recently, we recalled when mail was delivered to the door more than once a day! Times certainly have changed, and sadly, I think we're losing the artistic sensibility of handwriting and placing thoughts on to paper. In time people will take classes to learn these lost arts! And perhaps there's a job for many who might have the time to teach weekend classes in cursive to children! ♥ to both of you!
You are in command of the English Language, Louise and that is why your writing is always so interesting! With some 365ers, the writing is as interesting as the photos are well composed! fav
I have so enjoyed seeing your scrapbook and as always am amazed at how you have been able to bring this art to life once again using the latest technology. I have enjoyed reading the previous comments - all so interesting! As a recipient of hand written letters from you I can tell you I have treasured them all and keep them in a box unlike email and text messages which disappear into the ether. To actually receive a card with beautiful hand writing is so unusual these days they are definitely worth treasuring. I only wish my own handwriting was better than what I consider a scribble! Lol! Perhaps I had better take those lessons !
@jerome@jyokota@gilbertwood@maggiemae@joansmor@pamknowler@louannwarren@lynnz@merrelyn@seattlite@jamibann@pandorasecho@judithdeacon@Dawn Wishing for more time to write to each of you to say "Thank You" for your very touching and heart-warming sentiments you left here. I've come to know that here amongst you is a scrapbooker and an amazing card designer, all of you marvelous photographers and articulate writers! I count this as a blessing to have had these shared thoughts from each of you as the year comes to a close. May the love and compassion in the community continue in 2019...I couldn't wish for more! Thank You ♥

Thanks for these lovely comments. Dear Louise, it touches me so much that you are so respectful of the handwriting. There is much more to it than just superficial, prettifying aesthetics. It is something deeply human in it, which is increasingly lost in other areas of life. The good form, which finds a personal and individual expression - as well as in a handwritten letter. You really have a precious treasure with these old letters.
In Finland's schools, handwriting was recently abolished. The pupils use only the keyboard of the computer for writing. The reason for this step is the requirements of the digital age. Learning the cursive is considered to be an unnecessary, time-consuming burden, too difficult for the children. The pupils welcome this change ...
Neurological studies indicate that the handwriting is better for the cognitive learning process. Handwriting would better activate corresponding brain regions. A French study found that children who write by hand learn to read much faster and better than children using a keyboard. And, according to a US study, students who take notes by hand also learn better than those who type lecture notes into their laptops. Who writes by hand, is increasingly forced to edit the information in the head and thus to understand.
In Europe, the education system in Finland was highly praised - because it was always in the lead in a rating system. Meanwhile, critical voices are increasing. Also the rating system is criticized. What does education mean? I think it's about basic questions that touch our humanity. I think that it's not just about quantity, it's about quality. I think that economic considerations alone are not enough. By the way: The rating system for education, which I mentioned earlier: The criteria were set by the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development).
what a wonderful post to find on the very last day of the year - a day of reflection for me and seeing this image and the beautiful responses here, well that's just the start I needed. you are magic Louise, happy new year to you :)
I still have my mother's pen which has to be filled with ink. Its all she used, even after ball point pens came into existence. I have to admit, I only hold it. I don't fill it up.
@jyokota Thank you for that... I'm remiss in not doing that more often... ♥
@koalagardens What a nice thing to say! Thank you! The responses were a real treat for me to read and I'm overjoyed that so many others felt connected with friends here today!
@filsie65 Phil! What a delightful analogy filled with understanding of this transition! It created an image to contemplate!
@golftragic@kwind@sstcowan Thank you for stopping to look and for adding your thoughts! The changes are underway...
@tunia I do believe I'd immediately revert to cursive if I were using a fountain pen! How wonderful to have this beautiful connection to your mother!
How wonderful to see this handwritten note and read all the wonderful responses. It is sad to see cursive, or even the written wird, go by the wayside.
@henrir Happy New Year's Eve, Henri! I think we only need to give this the passage of time before something clicks and it will have a resurgence! Who would have thought vinyl records and "film cameras" would become popular again!
