(No, not a typo...) Meat Bees are determined and persistent, so the downside of Covid-driven outdoor dining is this... Years ago I found there was a price to pay for swatting them off. Now I sit and observe them and exact my price by using every opportunity to get a good photograph.
'twas a delicious breakfast! I ordered that and a tropical-fruit plate every morning!
...additionally... My daughter looked this one up and confirmed it was a Yellow Jacket Wasp... I'm not his equal in a swatting match!
yowsers! i, too, have learned not to swat them off. i did once and its needle must've broken and remained in my skin for a few hours while my whole face and body grew covered in rash. 😜 but i can't blame him, smoked salmon for breakfast is the best! nice macro capture. aces!
@summerfield Wow! "Back in the day" I just thought they were like flies, and only a nuisance to food on a plate...*Wrong*! I don't know if they actually sting or bite...I could see the chunks he took out of that salmon! Ouch!
Yes the downside of alfresco eating! I have noticed this week that there has been an increase in the number of wasps- it’s that time of year! I just watch them but Barb’s DIL Lara runs round like a maniac screaming and of course it makes them mad!
Wow, Louise...looks like a hungry yellow jacket. Down on Crescent Street, we had honey bees on all the sweet stuff...syrup bottles, jelly and jams, orange slices. I ate veggie omelettes, hash browns and sourdough toast. And carried a portable electric fan to blow them away. I am allergic!
I hate wasps though I know they do a super job of cleaning up rubbish in the garden. Last year one stung me right by my eye and it's put me off them a tad! Waiting for the first frost, which will kill them off! But yes, a super shot and I am glad you can be patient enough to wait so you don't get stung.
@gardenfolk You said it here first! Sent picture to my daughter, as her son, Bodhi, has a Transformer costume that looks like this. She confirmed what you said! ("Meat Bee Costume" doesn't have the same aggressive ring to it, does it?!)
@Weezilou nice picture. Wasps are common in some Greek islands and I’ve learned from the restaurants’ waiters there to put a cup with used coffee powder on the table and set the powder on fire. It just produces a pleasantly smelling smoke that wasps, bees, and the like apparently hate. Hope it helps also in Southern California
@caterina What excellent information! It sounds very practical, and I will most definitely try this! When we have the opportunity to return to Canada in the summer, we eat outside a lot and the bees are a terrible nuisance. I will write my friends there and share this suggestion! Thank you so very much!
@caterina In a note to the staff at the Hotel, I enclosed this photo with your information! I'm sure they'll be happy to receive it as they wouldn't want their guests to be stung! Thanks again!
