...at least that's what Ken said when he saw this...1961, I think. I happened across this after chatting today with my cousin, and we started swapping old photos. I hadn't thought of the period TV show "Mad Men", but it's *SO* of an era! My date? I saw the name and I remember the name, but I almost think someone set me up with him as I have no other recollection of him! My parents, next to me, are looking quite happy. All the others I remember well...and I remember stories about all of them! That old adage about "Little Pitchers" having big ears...that was me...I was paying attention and took it all in. The stories I could write...
Except for my "date" that night... I wonder what happened to "Bill"...
What a fabulous photo! Love the fashions and it shouts Mad Men! I notice the women have the cigarettes ! It was a time when it was quite glamorous to smoke! How things change! Fav!
I'm watching Mad Men at the moment and thought the smoking was over done , but your picture seem to show that it was much more obvious then. love these old pictures with their great color,...
This is fabulous. Look at those dresses and full skirts. And all the guys in ties. When was the last time we all dressed up like that for a date. And the gals smoking cigarettes?? Love the narrative. This was our era -- we were married in late 1960... Remember it well Ah, those were the days? Or were they?
@jack4john I remember these times so well...you can see I was old enough to be taking it all in, (but I was there, holding a glass of Coke!) I hated the smoke-filled air and there wasn't a night that we didn't have to wait for dinner (and no snacking allowed beforehand!) until they'd had their cocktail hour! I could write some notes about all the people in this picture and the stories I overheard! Looking back, I think it was an interesting era...and before things changed with acid rock and hippies!
@jack4john Are you much younger? And maybe life in Galway was more "gentle"... I wanted to as that "Mad Men really got it right! We loved watching that series!
@aglennc The last time... for me, High School proms, maybe! The dress I was wearing was a favorite of mine...white wool (color not correct here...) by Lanz...remember how girls loved that label?! I never smoked ... This picture of my dad *without* a cigaret may be one of the few I have! He died of lung cancer when he was 59...sad. Ken and I married in '69. To have been a teen through the rock'n'roll era was the best! Were they "The Days"? I couldn't be happier that this was my era. It wasn't that much fun to experience, I think, since the Roaring 20's! (And I think there hasn't been a distinctive era since then...unless it was the wide-shoulders-teased-high-bangs for teen-agers in the 80s).
I was born in 1961, July. I had two uncles in Philadelphia when they sent home photographs they looked like this one big and in color. The few pictures we took were very small B&W snaps..
@jack4john For a moment I thought you were our eldest daughter's age, but her birthday is July 27, 1971. I was taking color photos with a camera of my own by this time...this would have been with my camera since I'm the keeper of the photo, added to my album all those years ago. Thanks for sharing...I love the ways in which we come to know one another here!
@summerfield I'm "the girl"... Those are my parents behind me on my left. I recall I had a cold that night... I don't think I smiled a great deal in photos until later years...can't say why...
Everything screams 60s! Reminds me of my house, my parents, the parties, the clothes just sooooooo nostalgic!! I would have been 7 years old so my parents would let me mingle but not stay up too late!
@stray_shooter I did set up an album for the old photos... I'll take take your request under consideration! Maybe we each should bring an old album (or a few pictures) to a get together!
