When I saw this display, I thought it belonged as a part of the story of Hawaii. I grew up eating Spam sandwiches, and I loved Vienna Sausages. (The latter also garners large displays on end caps!) I knew both were very popular in the islands, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. Seems this was served to GI's in WWII and was later embraced in popularity in this part of the world. (The folks in Guam eat the most with 16 cans per capita per person annually). There was a lot more interesting information about this canned meat (which is NOT filled with snouts & ears!) ,,, but I no longer want it in my sandwich., thank you very much...
(My typing was so bad on the first try) I loved it too, particularly in a grilled cheese sandwich. My father took it everyday for his sandwich and I did Tuna. One day my mother said she refused to make our lunch bags any more as she was tired of making the same thing every day. LOL
oh, my lord! that's a lot if spam! we rarely ever had spam growing up in the old country. but we had those canned vienna sausage which i loved. i still buy spam when it's on sale but to put in the box for the old country. i'd need about 10 boxes to put these all in!
h.... Spam and Vienna Sausage.... John often likes a slice or two of Spam for lunch, even now (I have a couple of cans in the pantry.) As for Vienna Sausage..... That was one of my all time favorite sandwiches all the years I took my lunch to school. The other was deviled egg. Still like them both.
@aglennc I'm amazed at the replies I've gotten here! I still LOVE egg salad sandwiches (AND Deviled eggs!) and when I can find it, Deviled Ham that had the little red devil on the label...no other kind tastes as good! And it had to be fresh from the can while it was soft...no once it was chilled! I suppose now-a-days those are our "comfort foods"!
