Love the way you caught it between the barbed wire and the pretty matching flowers. Which mode do you shoot them in April? I have just bought a Canon 70-300 lens and have to get to know it ;-)
@ludwigsdiana That's my go-to lens! It's light enough for me to hand hold, but gives me that extra zoom for birds and animals. Mine is 8 years old now and still going.
I shot these using the Av mode (aperture priority). My 70-300mm is f/4-5.6 so it won't open for very wide apertures. That's ok ... I need the deeper focal area for birds. I shot this at f/6.3. Could have gone smaller, but it was a bit overcast and I can only handhold a shot if it's above 1/80 for exposure. Av automatically selects the ISO and shutter speed. Here the shutter speed set by the camera was 1/500.
I do use a single point for my auto focus that I set in camera, and I see I somehow got it set on AI Servo, which is a mode you can use for movement. Happy circumstance for the birds. I usually have it set on "one shot."
I also use back button focus. I set my AF-On button as my focus button and focus using my thumb. Then I don't have do the half press on the shutter button for focusing. I focus with my designated focus button, and then push my shutter to snap the image. I can also just hold down my focus button while shooting, and it will refocus between shutter snaps.
@aecasey What a wonderful detailed description April, thanks so much! My lens is a 70-300 11 which is a newer model. I should imagine they function the same. I have always admired your shots, that is what made me choose this lens. thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it. Now to get some decent shots with it ;-)
