John and I went for a walk this afternoon and enjoyed the sunshine and low humidity. June 14 is celebrated in the United States as Flag Day, commemorating the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. It is not a federal holiday which means that banks and businesses are open and the mail is delivered. John observed that more people would probably display their flags if they got the day off. As it stands, I'll bet most people couldn't tell you the significance of June 14 in our country's history.
I'm pretty sure you are right about people not even knowing about Flag Day. I happen to know it only because my brother was born on June 14th and my father always let us know it was flag day!
It's sad, but I think John is right. I remember vaguely that a lot of businesses used to display their flags on Flag Day but you don't even see that any more.
