Literature Project #16 Wilkie Collins 'The Woman in White'
For my Get Pushed challenge Susan, @wakelys, challenged me "to illustrate in some way Wilkie Collins' 'Woman in White'." I had not read the book so got stuck in and what a wonderful read it is, it is a book that I want to savour (the writing is so captivating) so unfortunately I am not going to finish it before the challenge deadline, however when I reached the point where Mr. Hartright visits the grave of Mrs. Fairlie I found this beautiful piece of descriptive writing.
“The burial-ground advanced, from the side of the church, a little way up the slope of the hill. It was surrounded by a rough, low stone wall, and was bare and open to the sky, except at one extremity, where a brook trickled down the stony hill-side, and a clump of dwarf trees threw their narrow shadows over the short, meagre grass. Just beyond the brook and trees, and not far from one of the three stone stiles which afforded entrance, at various points, to the churchyard, rose the white marble cross that distinguished Mrs. Fairlie’s grave from the humbler monuments scattered about it.”
I am posting this a day early because tomorrow is promising to be a bit hectic.
@wakelys Hi Susan. Thank you so much for this challenge, I am loving the book and regret not having read it before. The writing is masterful. Hope you like both the passage I have quoted and the photograph. Cheers.
Great response and glad you are enjoying the read. t is one of may favourites!
The piece of writing you included is beautiful and your photo works well with it, meeting superbly the challenge I set.
