First Day of School by bkbinthecity

First Day of School

Well today is the first day of school for most students here in Edmonton. So I decided to take a trip down memory lane.
My first day of school was in Sept. of 1968. Back then students were given a young tree to take home to plant. So my sister who was a year ahead of me and myself planted these trees in our backyard.
Fast forward 43 years later and this is me standing beside those trees. I am 5' 10"
so these trees I am guessing are 30-40 feet tall. I am not sure if they still do this today but it is neat to still have these around
Love this shot and the story behind it!

wow! love the story behind the tree. Makes me wonder whatever happened to the tree I planted during our elementary days tree planting. Gotta look for that one. Thanks for sharing.

Your tree. Great legacy and it should be something that continues in all school systems.

wow - that's fabulous! I planted an acorn in an old tree stump in an old garden of ours when I was 4. I haven't been back for a while but it was about 8' tall a couple of years ago - it's fab to see a natural thing as old as you grow!!

awesome ideas (planting the trees and taking the pic) and awesome shot to get the full height of the trees in. How nice for your Mom to still live there.
September 2nd, 2011
that is an amazing story; amazing photo, too! isn't it nice that you have your very own bkb tree? i love that idea, and that's the initiative that our government should encourage our schools to do; not those ridiculous 'ban the plastic shopping bag' crap or something. i think i will be e-mailing my MP to bring this up. ooops, my MP died last week. maybe i'll write the education minister, whoever that is! great photo.

A great idea..if every child plants at tree there must be a lot of those tall trees around. when we were kids it was a bit different.. if you imagine a tall conical (witches) hat all nicely decorated from the outside and full of candies on the inside...we were presented with one of these on our first day of school I guess so we were not scared of school but rather looking forward to it. I still have a picture of my brother proudly carrying his goodie gooddie hat.

@bruni We do have a lot of trees around for sure. I think that this was one of the reasons for giving out trees as the neighbourhood at the time was really new and not a lot of trees around at that time. I have never heard of the candy hats before. At the time I think I would have loved the candy over the tree. Now I am glad for the trees
