There are not to many cities or towns that can say that they still have a functioning water tower. This water tower is located in the city of Wetaskiwin and is Canada's oldest functioning water tower.
It was constructed in 1910, stands 150 feet tall. It was refurbished in 2005 and the capacity 100,000 gallons of water it holds still forms part of the city reservoir.
When we were there I learned that it is illuminated at night serving as a beacon a you drive into the city. I guess that means that I will have to take a drive out there some evening
There are a few water towers around Australia, but I'm not sure how many still function. The first thing I thought of when I saw your pic was 'War of the Worlds'! :)
Hey, we know this well. I have cousins who have lived in Wetaskiwin for, probably, 50 years. Thanks for the history of it. Didn't know that. There's also a major water tower in the center of Three Hills.
Very interesting -- well spotted, captured, and interesting history. I took shots of water towers on our drive from northern Michigan to Chicago, but am not sure which ones are still functioning. I suspect several are as they are in rural areas.

Ah, that makes sense... Thanks for the info nugget. ;-)
