Tonight Edmonton's NHL team, the Edmonton Oilers, start the regular season in St. Louis. Every year the teams compete to win the Stanley Cup. The trophy was commissioned in 1892 by Lord Stanley Preston who was Governor General of Canada at the time. It was first presented in 1893 to the Montreal HC.
Edmonton has been in the league since 1979 and has won it 5 times.
This is a giant sized replica that sits near the sports store that has the murals on it, one if which I posted a couple if days ago
I wondered if this was a replica. I don't remember seeing photos of the "real thing" being nearly this massive. Uh, I'm torn! I have relatives in both Edmonton and Calgary -- even Red Deer -- and their allegiance to the teams is mixed. I'd better stay neutral.
Great capture and commentary! Our NHL team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, began their season tonight in Dallas. We're losing 1-0 at the end of the first period, but there's always hope...go Pens! And Oilers! ;-)
I can't help but mention that the 'real' cup was here in Chicago last night at our opening game, along with the 'raising of the banner' from winning last year's tournament.
