House Number One by bkbinthecity

House Number One

John built his first house in 1876 on the Southside of the river making it the oldest private residence in Edmonton. It was located directly across from Fort Edmonton.
He continued to build York boats for the Hudson Bay Company. He ran his Ferry operation from this location. As well he operated a Freight Company and a small General Store inside his house .
He would occasionally take in boarders if there was other place available.
His sister who arrived in 1881 from Orkney lived with him for a period of time.
John lived in this house until 1884.
Nicely captured

It may have been tiny by our standards, but it looks cozy and it did the job it was intended to do- provide shelter. Nice shot!

I'd say the house could have been a bit drafty. People in this time were accustomed to small quarters weren't they. This house seems small by today's standards to have had store and boarders and additional family members.

Two rooms in my house were logging camp cabins built about this same time. Then later additions connected them and added rooms and a second floor.
