Susan was my mother in laws doll, which now belongs to my daughter. Shortly after she came to our house she had to go to the Doll Hospital in Newark to be restrung,as the rubber bands inside her had perished & her arms fell off!!
After about two weeks we were able to take her home again, arms back where they should be & a touch of paint on her toes & fingers. Also, as the hospital is a museum they were able to tell us a little bit about her. This kind of doll was made around the 1920s primarily for the American market, so not sure how she came into this family....
A beautiful black dolly -- I remember my childhood friend had a black dolly of which I was quite envious of , as my dolly was only the run-of-the-mill white dolly !!
My mother had two baby dolls as a child...one black and one white. She loved the black one and took her to school one day. The teacher called her mother, my grandmother, down to school and after that day, my mother never saw her beloved doll again. So sad. I have the other doll...about 95 years old.
I love this - what a wonderful post today with its story. How nice that this doll was able to be restored to her former beauty. Such a gem to still have in the family.
Cool doll and a lovely story behind it. My daughter when she was a little girl had dolls like this. Very often the arms and legs would come off one time or another.
@phil_sandford It was a different time with strong opinions. But a little girl just wanted her favorite doll. Adults can learn lessons from children too.
@30pics4jackiesdiamond Thanks for the info as to how she arrived in the family
@gardenfolk sad about your mothers doll, it is typical of adults to create prejudice & children to see things simply .
