Can you tell that there was food involved in this shot?
The most useful command that we ever learned at Dog School was the emergency recall. We use the word "meat." You practice the recall with the very best treat that a dog can possibly imagine - and that is the only time they get it. We have had to actually use it a few times (when one of us forgot to shut the gate) and thank doG it works. Whenever we grill streak we practice. These guys are smart enough to know that it is coming. The trick is they don't know when. So, later tonight, when we need them to come in we will get the steak pieces that are on the counter and wait for them to be in the back of the yard. "Maggie, Meat." will bring them running every time.
I've trained my dogs the same way. Only I've used odd words sometimes ( no, not curse words), just like "Okay" meaning "Out". I just like to watch the expressions on friends faces when I say OK and the lifeless sleeping dogs suddenly spring to life and run towards the door.
What a great double portrait. I have to confess, everything about Maggie (I assume she is on our left) makes me smile. Her pose, her markings, her disheveled fur. All the while Charlie sits like a perfectly groomed gentleman.
@psychographer you got that exactly right. @leananiemand two of the loves of my life. @clmiller Thankfully, they did. They are pretty well behaved except when the doorbell rings. All bets are off. @cromwell Not a flower so I hoped you would. Would love to see that. Guess I trained with boring words. @allie912 You have them pegged. That is what life is like with these two. @soboy5 Better if the stove wasn't there but this is my day today. @kellc Thank you Kelly.
@cromwell Cromwell you are seriously weird! I imagine you will take that as the compliment that was meant.
Cathy I absolutely love the expressions on your dog's faces they are superb.
I had ever heard of this type training. I did train my dog the "down at a distance" which is for emergencies...you get them running away from or towards you and just yell their names and "down!" my little Sheltie was very good at it..we lived near a bust road...so it was a good safety thing. N meat involved though! LOL
My newphews dogs, Art and Romo, are here for a visit. Now I have three of them giving me these faces all day. These two are little heart breakers! Did they get a nice cookie for this?
I love Welsh Corgis! That was the first dog we had as a pet while growing up. Unfortunately our little postage stamp of a yard was not enough room for Reese, so he ended up being adopted by a family who owned a farm. But we never forgot him and those little legs spinning underneath him as he ran down the street! He had the same coloring as the one on the right. Cute shot!!
