The "Holy Grail" of whale watching is to get a "breach" - that jump out of the water for the sheer joy of it. We took a whale watching tour with the Save the Whale Foundation. We could have taken a cheaper one, but this way our money went to a little something more. And we had two marine biologists with us, and a bartender! So, drink in hand I went swaying around the boat and had a blast. We were lucky to go at prime whale season in Hawaii. These huge creatures come back to the warm bays to mate - and the next year to give birth. Once you know what to look for they are everywhere. I have loads of shots of rolls, tails, blow holes - you name it. But this is as close as I got to the breach. I was in awe - and forgot to trip the shutter in time to get the money shot. For the rest of our trip we spent time watching the bay and finding the blow holes.
Fantastic capture. How fortunate you saw so many whales. We went on a whale watching trip off the Southern California coast in February 1989 (on an 18th century schooner - that part of the trip was cool) and did not see a single whale!
