The Locket by darylo

The Locket

My maternal grandmother, Ethel Butler Thomas Hunter, died at the age of 103 June 19, 2009. She was the only child of Dr. Marion Russell Thomas (on right in photo) and Ethel Ray Butler (the tiny photo in my grandmother's locket on the left--on the right of the locket is my grandmother as a child, similar to the ones on the left taken of her at various stages of youth). She grew up in Savannah, GA, and she attended Vassar College (graduated in 1928) before she returned to Savannah and married my grandfather (FC Hunter, but he went by "Bill" -- Frances was not a fun boy's name I think at the time).

Inside the locket is a piece of my grandmother's mother's hair--you can see it, but you'll have to zoom and look very closely to distinguish it. I believe this is the only photo I have of my G Grandmother, and possibly the only photo on the right of my G Grandfather. The locket was given to me by my grandmother on one of my birthdays I believe. She has given me some really beautiful pieces of jewelry and some very interesting pieces of silver (like a little "coin purse" that looks like an old cigarette case--I'll have to pull that out too!).

My great-grandparents divorced when my grandmother was a child. I've heard various stories about their relationship, but after the divorce, my great-grandmother lived in Maryland, and I have very little information about her. Part of my work this week will be to try and see if I can find stuff in some genealogy sites with dates. I am a little unnerved because I can't find my genealogy notes from my interviews, but they are somewhere in my office. As ambitious as this March project is, I may be biting off too much at one time, as evidence of me posting a day late for yesterday's photo and having to post a new one today later!

I'll try to loop back to edit the information here with details on my great grandfather too. He is the son of Edward Jonathan Thomas, whom you can see here: https://365project.org/darylo/2021/2021-03-06

EJT had multiple children, so I'm going to get back to this later. Have a tutoring client to prep for...back soon.

It's so enjoyable, reading your family history - I'm tempted to look into joining one of the genealogy sites - I have a flow chart of names from my mother's side of the family, but very little else and nothing from my father's side.
