Upon my recent photo-wander through the NYC Public Library, it was heartening to see so many people there with books sprawled out on tables reading and researching - yes along with their lap tops. But it is important to note that no matter how much the digital age takes over, real books - with paper, print and binding (and each with its own feel and smell) - must be appreciated and are still relevant. From many of the comments on my library postings, its clear that many of us on 365 love real books. So please post your shots here featuring books and/or libraries and keep books relevant. Here is one of mine from the other day to start it off:
Okay, I'm a writer and English professor, so I'm in love with this topic. I'll post a few... This is from my own collection of books I had as a kid-- the "How, Why, and Wonder" series (my aunt worked at the company). These just made their way back to me.
@beme - OMG I remember Mad I used to love reading them as a kid! I'm a lawyer now so I live surrounded by stacks of law books. Quite a leap uh I went from Mad to Law!
@michaelelliott... maybe not such a leap? (my mom's a lawyer, too, so I feel entitled to joke around...you're giving me an idea for my next shot, though!)
I'm actually being selective here, this is embarrassing how many book shots I have... anyway, love this cover (this was from an entry called "how I cheat"-- when I read a book I'm not teaching during the semester, and it's also some great, weird writing.)
i used to be a library rat in high school; it's where i can be found, not doing school work, but just reading. i've posted some photos of books last year:
in september when i did the beatles challenge
in august when i did the novel challenge:
and in march:
i have three large bookshelves full of books, plus books on the floor, in the bedroom and still i have some in storage. i can't part with my books. some of them i've been lugging with me when i lived in europe and in muscat.
I LOVE books! I did an entire month of photos (October) based on books. I recreated the cover photos. These are not from the theme but are photos with books in them.
@deens - yes I remembered and knew you'd find this thread. This shot of yours is a classic! I recently went back to the NYC Pub Lib looking for new shots and I thought off hour but packed with people - so great!
Here's just a small section of my own personal library - two bookcases of fiction in the hall of my tiny flat. There's another shelf of non-fiction in the living room. :-)
@shadesofgrey sure! There are several in the city, the main one is pretty big, the annex ones are definitely too small (like one room). But in the big one, I never dared, I would be too scared everyone will hear the click and turn back :-0 I'm not comfortable with these public shots...
While I love to read, I don't have many book photos; just this one, of the book my sister wrote and published last year (and she's about to release her second!)
@definitelydeb what a small world! she's aiming for a March publication of the second one in the series! @shantwin is a good friend of my sisters and has a photo of her at one of her readings:
From vintage theme week in May 2011, a pile of some of my antique books against the backdrop of the bottom two rows of the floor to ceiling bookshelves in my living room:
@ptowncook Copenhagen, Denmark. I think they modelled it after the library in "City of Angels", but I can't remember the city. L.A. I think? They just redecorated it a few years back. I love it there, it is one of my favourite places in the city!

Yes, I have an ebook reader on my iphone just so I can have something to read if I'm waiting at the dr's office and don't want to rot my brain with the womens magazines they have laying around. But I much prefer books, and drag my husband off to bookfest every 6 months
Here he is guarding my latest haul
@michaelelliott Thank you for this most interesting theme. One of my favorites though I haven't done it justice, I'm afraid.
VIEW INTO MY WORLD
This photo shows details from 3 of my bookcases. On the left is a floor to ceiling bookcase that holds all of my poetry collection. Top right is a detail from my cookbook collection and the bookcase on the bottom right (which is really 3 bookcases) collects everything else from art, to beach books to philosophy to literature. I keep promising myself not to buy anymore because I've run out of shelves, but it's hard.
@ptowncook@pandorasecho - You're very welcome and thank you for supporting it. The response has been amazing. So great to see so many of us love books and so many fabulous photos!

The book corner in the living room. Just stacked out with them in the utility, never short of anything to read!
@kammy I love that shot! The background turned out cool.

This is actually a friend's bookshelf, as mine is a mess at the moment! I may pick a single book of my own to photograph later...
