What a difference a day makes! We woke (alarms set for a little later than usual) to bright sun and blue skies.

We looked out of our hotel window and could see the Picos de Europa the highest peaks still covered in a light dusting of snow. It turns out that our hotel is in fact a converted 15th century convent and the breakfast room is the most original part with high vaulted ceilings and the original stone walls. After a very good breakfast (only €9.5 each), we headed out into the sunshine to explore Llanes.

It really is a pretty town with golden sandy beaches, an interesting little dock and harbour and peculiar wooden balconied buildings. We took it slowly, stopped for a drink that developed into a light lunch of calamari (so good that we booked in for dinner) and then walked up to the lighthouse.

After an ice cream we headed back for a brief siesta before dinner back at our favourite restaurant. I started with scallops (8 of them!) and moved onto monk fish with boiled potatoes, washed down with the local cider. The cider is still and dry and has to be served by pouring it from a height into the glass a little at a time which then has be be drunk in one go like a shot - excellent!

A great start to our trip. (13,038 footsteps).
