25th March 2022

2 years and 2 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020

As forecast for over a week and confirmed by the woman in the Tourist Information office yesterday - it was pouring down this morning and continued this way all day. We had a leisurely breakfast before putting on our thermals and waterproofs and heading out. The rain was relentless as it is apparently for 260 days each year.

We walked arounds the harbour, past the Bryggen building to a museum - the `Bergenhus Fortress Museum’ that Colin wanted to visit and unusually for Bergen it was free. It was also warm and dry! The museum is a military museum covering the involvement of Norway during the Second World War and also the way that Germany used the fjords to hide their U boats. I found the room about the role of women during the armed forces including many senior ranking women in the Forces now very interesting.

We geared up to leaving the museum out into the rain again and headed for the Solros cafe I had spotted during my research before we left. It has the reputation of an excellent cafe with home made cakes but most importantly it is painted in my favourite shade of blue! This is us after lunch in our full wet weather gear. It was a lovely cafe with delicious mozzarella and pesto baguettes followed by caffe lattes and Norwegian ‘Danish’ pastries - a contradiction in name!

We finally had had enough of the rain (I think my waterproof need reproofing), stopping by Rema 1000 supermarket to pick up dinner and then spent the late afternoon warming up and watching Netflix!

As a footnote, I managed my most elaborate meal cooking away from home with limited ingredients this evening. Using half a pack of penne pasta we had found in the apartment along with a fresh pasta sauce and some frozen peas, I made a decent pasta dish topped off with pan fried salmon - very tasty and we followed up with a Skir yoghurt each.
