22nd June 2013

Liverpool Street Station.

The second day of my 24 hour shoot with 'Photo 24'. One of the last places I visited was Liverpool Street Station. I wanted to try something a bit different so to try and give a sense of movement I used a slow exposure whilst simultaneously zooming out from a central point of focus.

This was really an experiment and I took quite a few... before I was interrupted by a member of staff who wanted to know what I was up to. Resisting the temptation to state the obvious I explained about the project we were involved in and he seemed to be content with this. I took a couple more on the principle that I wasn't doing anything wrong but decided to carry on my journey soon after!!

If you are interested I have put a small selection of images from the 349 I took on Saturday onto Flickr - http://www.flickr.com/photos/emmadurnford/sets/72157634292541476/
This is a really interesting effect, Emnma, it helps create a sense of constant activity--well done! Your experience with the staff member reminds me of the day when I was walking along a street near where I live and noticed a hotel door with curved handles reflected in the glass of the door--started to take pictures, and a security guard came out and asked what I was doing. I told him, and he said nobody was supposed to take photos of the building. I think he thought I might be a terrorist or something--ridiculous! By the way, Emma, are you still coming to Toronto in the fall?

People are so paranoic about photo taking but I guess after so many awful world events, they can't be too careful! This style of photography is good - I wonder if it is possible to get the central point totally in focus for it!

@tristansmum I'm not sure what his problem was, perhaps was I going to sell it...? We are still on line for Toronto at the beginning of October, really excited as we've never been to the East coast of Canada before (just BC and Alberta)

@maggiemae I remember you had problems with your tripod. This would have been better with a tripod as I may have got the central spot sharper, I think it was camera shake due to the slow exposure. There was no way I could have got away with that!! I like the effect and so will try again in a friendly place with tripod!

@brav @simster Thank you :-)

@emmadurnford So you're visiting the east coast as well as Toronto? I don't know how long you'll be in the city, or how much time you'll have, but if you like the idea of meeting and perhaps going to High Park or Edwards Gardens to take some pictures, let me know. You can email me if you like at stephanie.swift@utoronto.ca. Of course I realize you may be too busy for that, just thought I'd mention it.

@tristansmum We are definitely still coming to Toronto at the beginning of October (having traveled down from Quebec via Montreal and Kingston). It would be lovely to meet up if we can (time allowing), perhaps for a cup of tea - not sure if I'll stretch hubby to more photography after an entire trip with camera!

@emmadurnford Well, if we can meet for a cup of tea or something, that would be nice. If you feel like visiting High Park or Edwards Gardens and have the time, and hubby prefers not to, they are both easily accessible by public transportation (which is how I get there). You have my email address, you can let me know closer to the time, and if nothing works out, I will completely understand!
