In many ways this church looks similar to many others to be seen in hundreds of towns and villages throughout England, but this one is just a bit special.
It is the oldest building in South Yorkshire, with parts dating back to around 750AD, and it is believed to be one of the ten oldest churches in England.
Not only that but some of the carved stones in the church are thought to come from the ruins of the Roman bath house in Doncaster. (A wonderful early example of recycling!)
Obviously many changes have been made over the centuries and it has been modified and extended. Almost every century has left it's mark on the building, but it still forms a pleasing overall design.
The latest change is a new stained glass window installed in the 20th century. Much older glass is shown in the lower inset - fragments of medieval glass have been made into a mosaic.
Thank you Camille. It was nice to visit this church again - it was where my brother got married.
