Barnard Castle is an attractive market town in the lower part of Teesdale and it is named after the castle around which the town grew.
It is situated some 60 miles north west of York, and is an interesting journey to make from York. First, a train to Darlington, and then a bus which passes through several attractive villages before arriving at Barnard Castle.
The castle is built on a rock outcrop overlooking the River Tees, on an easily defended site.
This shot shows part of the inner ward of the castle, with one of the towers and part of the curtain wall. The modern wooden staircase is where the great hall would once have stood.
A fascinating ruin to explore, and as a bonus, a half hour walk along riverside paths took me to the ruins of Egglestone Abbey, another lovely historical site.
I haven't been here since 1973 - if my memory serves me correctly, they've done a lot more preservation work since then Britain does the best castles...
Thank you Richard - they appear to have done more work to conserve the buildings since I was last there around 20 years ago. There is also a fascinating sensory garden on part of the site too. I agree that Britain does the best castles... and also a pretty good line in abbeys too!
Thank you Graham, and thank you for the fav!
