Yorkshire Wolds Landscape by fishers

Yorkshire Wolds Landscape

We are fortunate in York to be reasonably close to several very attractive areas of countryside - the Yorkshire Dales to the west, the North York Moors to the north-east, and the Yorkshire Wolds to the east.

Here is a shot from the Wolds Way long distance footpath west of the village of Thixendale, where several deep valleys converge.

The Yorkshire Wolds are made of chalk, and the valleys were created at the end of the ice age when there was much more water in the area than there is now. Many of these valleys are now completely dry.

The valleys are often used as pasture land for sheep or cattle, while the flat tops of the hills are used for a variety of crops.

Farms tend to be large, while the villages are small, often with very few facilities, but usually quite attractive.

The walk that I did was a figure of eight route some 8 miles long, with lovely views across the open landscapes of the hilltops, but with several deep valleys to cross. As you can see, the weather was ideal for such an excursion.
