Recent local media reports about some of York's museums prompted Lucy and I to visit the Yorkshire Museum yesterday, since it was her day off work. The history exhibits in the museum give a marvellous sweep from Roman times to the Middle Ages.
This exhibit is the Ormside Bowl, and the following extract from the notice beside it gives an indication of it's past - 'The first Vikings to arrive in Northumbria looted its religious treasures. An ecclesiastical vessel from an Anglian monastery was converted in Jorvik (Viking York) into this drinking bowl for a Viking warrior'. The bowl was originally made about 750AD, and it was refashioned sometime between 850 and 900AD.
Thank you all for your nice comments. It's not very often I get into the Yorkshire Museum, so it was fascinating to be reminded of the many interesting objects on display there.

These are quite recent compared with the 1700 year old Roman remains that we also saw! Thank you for dropping by.
