The mound (motte) and the tower on it are the most prominent remains of York's castle. For almost 1000 years a castle has stood on this site, and it has an interesting history.
The right hand side of this image, above the vans, has yet another of York's various archaeological digs. The purpose here is to check on the stability of the mound, and to look at the remains of a wall (covered by the lower part of the mound since the mid 1930's) of what was part of York Prison.
This shot was taken from what was once the debtor's prison, and now forms part of the Castle Museum.
Thank you all for your kind comments and favs. We seem to be developing an archaeological theme here!
