One of the more unusual finds on my Saturday walk was this Wishing Tree. There is a tradition in the Yorkshire Dales of hammering coins into the trunk of a fallen tree and making a wish (much like a wishing well). Large numbers of coins have been hammered into this fallen trunk, and some are of considerable age judging by their condition.
This is one of two Wishing Trees I found on my walk. The other was cut into the shape of a seat, with all it's back covered in coins.
Thank you all for your comments and favs - it's really good to hear from you. I've been reading a little more about wishing trees, and it seems that the Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria and parts of Scotland are the main areas where they are found.
