OK, I admit it, I can't resist posting a collage of the evening return steam service from Scarborough, to complement yesterday's collage of the departure to Scarborough.
The top two shots show the train rounding the curve as it approaches the station. The bottom left shot shows it stood at the south end of platform 5, and attracting a crowd. Thhe bottom right shot shows it leaving the station.
The locomotive used on these services this year was built in 1942 by the LMS railway at their Crewe Works. It had a working life of 16 years, much of it based around Sheffield. After being withdrawn from service, she was sent down to Barry scrapyard in South Wales where she remained for over 8 years. The owner of the scrapyard retained many locomotives for long periods, and over half the locomotives sold to the scrapyard were later purchased by preservationists. 48151 was one of those rescued and later restored for main line use.
Following completion of her latest overhaul in 2010, she has been a regular performer on services provided by West Coast Railways.
Love it. Love everything to do with steam. I grew up with it and the last time I went by train to Scarborough it was hauled by the Flying Scotsman ... before the ten-year refit!
i, too, adore trains. had several toy sets as a child, including a narrow gauge. this is another very good collection of photos. each could stand alone but i really like the bottom right. nice pov.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I'm pleased so many of you share my enjoyment of steam trains. It may be a while before I have more steam photos to share, since there are very few at York now until just before Christmas.
