There are signs of new growth on many plants now as we move into Spring. This shot shows the opening leaf bud of a Horse Chestnut tree.
The horse chestnut is a tall, broad tree that has been widely planted in parks and gardens. Originally native to the mountains of northern Greece and Albania, it was introduced into the UK in 1616 and has since become naturalised. A mature tree can reach a height of 40 metres (130 feet). In May, rows of horse chestnuts lining roads and in woodlands provide a spectacular display of 'candles' - large, upright flower spikes ranging in colour from white to deep pink. In autumn, it sheds its spiny-cased seeds, known as conkers, and the conkers are used by children in the popular game of conkers.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
A little warmer today, but with wind and heavy rain showers making it a bit unpleasant to be out if caught in one of the showers. It may be spring but it doesn't really feel like it, although all the spring flowers make it look more spring like.
