This shot of Stoksley High Street is taken from West Green, looking north-east and showing some of the varied architecture to be found. There are some good examples of Georgian architecture in this shot.
Stokesley is a Market town immediately to the north of the Cleveland Hills, the edge of the North York Moors upland area. It is only 8 miles from Middlesborough, so it lies between two very different worlds.
Stokesley is an old town, being mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086AD. There are numerous interesting historical features, including a packhorse bridge and a preserved waterwheel, amongst other things, all within a town with a population of only around 5,500 people.
I watched the Tour of Britain cycle race on Wednesday as it passed through Stokesley, and this high street was packed with people. It would seem a lot of people were drawn to the town to see the spectacle.
Lovely, looks a great wee place. Not one we have visited yet. Maybe next time! We just had a week in Wensleydale..... it rained and rained and rained! Not as sad to leave as I usually would be lol.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
It seems the town is being transformed again. I passed through on the Moorsbus this afternoon, and saw almost every open space being filled with amusement rides ready for the Stokesley Fair which runs from 14th to 17th September and finishes with the Stokesley Agricultural Show on Saturday 17th September.
