The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. People take a little time out of their day to remember those who fell in battle.
Somehow, humanity has managed to spread warfare to virtually every corner of the globe. This shot, taken by my son in law, is of the military cemetery at San Carlos on the Falkland Islands, where conflict between British and Argentinian forces ended forty years ago. San Carlos was where the first major landing of British Military personnel took place to remove the Argentinian occupiers on the islands.
Sadly, other wars have replaced it, most notably the current war between Ukraine and Russia, where latest estimates suggest each side has suffered over 100,000 casualties, killed and injured.
I'm not sure if humanity will ever realise that war isn't a good idea. In the meantime all we can do is support the loved ones of those killed and injured, care for the injured, and take a few moments to remember the many, many still suffering as a result of earlier wars.
I have stood on the spot where this picture was taken and wondered why on earth we continue to fail ever to learn from history. Humanity continues to loose 100s of thousand of innocent people just because a few tyrants are allowed to pursue ideological dreams.
Great thoughts. For me 'Lest we forget' means that we should make sure this won't happen again but then we see what is going on in Ukraine. I read that around 500,000 lives on each side have been lost already.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I've always thought I would like to explore the Falkland Islands - a bleak and harsh environment, but one of great beauty and with very interesting wildlife.
