What's the matter with Mary Jane? by happypat

What's the matter with Mary Jane?

What is the matter with Mary Jane?
She's crying with all her might and main
And she won't eat her dinner- rice pudding again,
What is the matter with Mary Jane ?

What is the matter with Mary Jane?
She's perfectly well and hasn't a pain
And it's lovely rice pudding for dinner again,
What is the matter with Mary Jane?

A. A. Milne.

Harry & I love rice pudding & the skin is the best bit !!
Semolina, Tapioca ( frog spawn ), Sago & Ground rice with a spoonful of jam in the middle...all staple puddings when I was a child ! Real comfort food!!
Last nights pudding cooked all day in the Aga!
What memories your photo brings back, it looks just like my mum's rice pudding and I used to love the skin! We had an aga when i was little so she must have cooked it all day in there too. Believe it or not I've never tried to make it myself, maybe I think it would never live up to the memory. Good to include the poem too, my mum used to read lots of poems to me including AA Milne, although I can't say I remember this one. Fav!

This is exactly how I remember my Mum's rice pudding too - complete with the same cooking dish! And the skin was always the best - especially scraping round the edge of the dish!

@samdan When Harry & I got married he didn't like the skin so I could eat it all myself but now he loves it & we have io share it !!

frog spawn? please tell me what is frog spawn? I'm pretty sure we don't have that over here and I need to know. I love AA Milne but I might be scared of the spawn.

Mmmmmm, I love rice pudding! My Mum used to make it often when I was a kid. Sean's @slang is the best though!

@stepheesue Tapioca looks just like frogs spawn when its cooked Stephanie, sort of round with a clearish outer layer so it's nick name was frogs spawn at school. LOL !

My dad's favourite - mum makes it almost every week and when she was in hospital a couple of years ago he even managed to make it himself.
I was up visiting him and I think it was the best rice pudding I had ever tasted.......so he was pretty pleased at that!!!!
Real comfort food isn't it!

@happypat oh i'm so relieved. I can totally go for rice pudding, and I'll even arm wrestle you for the skin, but the frog spawn thing almost put me over the edge. . .whew. now I can go about my day. . .:)))

Rice pudding I like but the others were food given at boarding school and boarding school food isn't always nice

Ughhh!!! School tapioca or semolina or rice pudding absolute torture!! I use semolina in pizza bases and it always takes me back to being a trainee dinner monitor (aged 5!!!). A girl called Caroline who never smiled (and was 6) made me have a big bowlful 'as a good example' so I put lots of jam in and stirred it round and round. The teacher was about to shout until she realised it was me (she was my godmother as it happened) but she still told me off and asked why I'd taken so much and then saw Caroline looking daggers at me. She told me years later that she had just the same issues with Caroline's mum who was also an old trout!! Having said that your rice pudding looks jolly nice - Nigel and Rachel would kill for that skin!

You can't beat a good rice pudding. Yum, and I like raisins in mine.

@judithg Your semolina would go all pink !!! What a bossy girl that Caroline was & must have made a big impression on you for you to remember her, & like mother like daughter ! Good job you had a guardian angel !

@digitalrn Ooh will try that too Rick next time . how extravagant !!!!
January 7th, 2012
@phil_howcroft You haven't lived if you don't eat the skin of all puddings & custard Phil !!

mmmm not sure that this is my favourite fare either Pat and @judithg but I appreciate your gorgeous photo. I can almost smell it cooking. I do like the sound of the jam in the middle, so maybe that would sweeten the deal for me. LOL

I haven't had rice pudding in ages...I might actually like it now. :) Maybe I should try making some. Yours looks delicious, Pat! My grandmother used to recite that poem to me when I was little and had the occasional 'attitude' issue. :) Wonderful, cozy photo!
