My mums old sewing machine in pride of place in Lydia's bedroom.
My mum bought this machine in 1954 & made lots of mine & my sisters clothes with it.
Money was short in those days, my dad was training to be a Chartered Accountant after leaving the RAF at the end of the war & women didn't work in those days so much so every little helped.
Although I am not a sewer I did make lots of curtains & dresses for Cathy when she was small.
It skipped a generation then as I don't think Cathy ever used it but Lydia is doing textiles at school for her A levels so the old machine comes out again
Of course the new modern ones are the bees knees & if she continues to enjoy sewing this will be replaced but I hope it will always have a place in our family.
As an after thought is a sewer a drain or someone who sews I ask myself?
Three good things:
1. Flannelette sheets.
2. I have sent an Advent Calendar to Max. Cost £1.99, postage £5.10 !!
3.I am feeling more energetic today!
One up from the treadle we learned on at school!! I had lots of smocked dresses my Mother made........I use my machine loads!! So glad your machine is going to a good home.......marvellous and thrilled to hear you are improving!!
What a treasure to have that sewing machine. I love to sew home projects and crafts, even though I don't know how to make clothing. May I ask who is Lydia?
What a pretty backdrop for this lovely old machine. Hope it has a long and happy life. Oh the vagaries of the English language - as one who sews it's definitely someone who sews!
The singer machine was the best ! My mum had a treadle which was in constant use. It is so good that the younger generation are still using sewing machines. Glad to know you are feeling better.
Oh I wish they'd had textiles when I was at school - we had sewing with Sr Mary Joseph (Banjo) but if you were top set you had to do Latin instead. I did sciences because I liked the hands on part and I'm really sad I didn't do art. I'm finding myself increasingly pleased that Adam wants to go to art school even though it's way out of our comfort zone - my dad would have loved it too and he was an engineer! So glad she has a machine that means something - they are a work of art even when not in use!
@judithg I hate sewing so much Judith I am ashamed to say I would almost rather buy new than sew on a button!!!!! Textiles now is rather exciting, not the relentless unpicking the nuns made us do if the hem wasn't straight!! Isn't that funny Adam likes art , Jack is like that ,loves art & music something not one of our or our son in laws family has ever excelled at. So many different openings now for these art based careers in media etc etc.
@happypat I know I'm scared about the job side but when you hear of lawyers and architects and alsorts not getting jobs I think why not go with art - as you say alsorts of options & the Olympics Opening Ceremony was a great showcase of our talent in this country.
Great shot, Pat. I have something very similar languishing in the bottom of a cupboard. I think I've used it once. Heaven alone knows who will get it next. Hopefully one of my nieces will treasure it.
a beautiful machine! I know she will love it! I am a seamstress and so was my mother and grandmother...I have just passed to my daughter, the machine I bought the year she was born. She is now using it to make curtains and things for her home. Sewing clothing used to be the economical way to go, but now it costs way more to sew clothing, so I use it mostly for crafting now.
Love this. It certainly speaks to the quality of a Singer sewing machine to have it still humming after almost 60 years.
I am so concerned to read that you've been under the weather, Pat...will have to do some back tracking to see what's been going on with you. I feel so out of touch.
@peggysirk Thank you for your concern Peggy but am on the mend now but have felt pretty rough all week & almost certain I have had pleurisy but going to the doc in the morning.... better late than never hey!!
