Open Day. by happypat

Open Day.

A long day today in Birmingham, we only got back at 8.45pm but just thought I would quickly upload this photo.
Not much of a one but as this is a diary of my life it is apt.
Lydia was quite taken with Birmingham uni, beautiful area of leafy Edgbaston..... the teaching aspect sounds excellent & we learnt loads from the talk ....what they expect in the personal statement etc. They also interview the ones that they chose to go further so we we'll have to see what happens next.
Her one grumble was that the part of the uni that she would be in all the time was very medically orientated, midwifery, nursing etc & she likes the mix of different subjects at Leicester especially.
The good news is that they had 70 places to offer each year much more than the 29 at others (600 apply every year)!
Leeds next & possibly Sheffield but 2 A's & a B needed there!!

Please excuse me if I don't comment tonight!!

Three good things:
1. A long but fabulous day in Birmingham.
2. I must have been the oldest person in that uni today but I kept up!!!!!!!
3. A pair of new shoes bought for Cathys birthday next week & a nice jacket for Lydia.......
Good luck Lydia! I'm not sorry not to have to do this again - been through it twice!

Decisions, decisions! At least now they are more informed about what the course is like and have visited the Uni's. My choice was based on little more than a paragraph from each in a booklet.

It's great that young people can get all this information ahead of time

tricky I know!!! But it documents the day and all the effort that goes into that decision!

Is it Birmingham City? Rachel has friends doing nursing at Birmingham Uni - it's all very confusing up there. You have to cheer yourself up by dividing that big number by 5 as everybody applies to 5 places - otherwise you'd give up! I thought it was hilarious at the open days as the teenagers tend to look very like their parents. In my day you'd wouldn't been seen dead going round with your family - I think now parents are having to stump up a lot more money they want to see what they're getting!

Yes Birmingham City Judith.....I have never seen any students on their own at these open days yet, in fact you would think the parents are the ones going all the questions they ask....it can get very tedious sometimes. The demos were very good & we actually were able to have a go at resuscitation a skill that unbelievably was not on the agenda when I was nursing, I don't think it had been invented 50 years ago!!! The practice models were amazing with eyes that moved when they were just lying there....weird!!

Kirsty did her one year PGCE at Birmingham City Uni' (post graduate certificate in Education ... a pre requisite after her BA to allow her to become a music teacher) ....she lived in leafy Edgbaston for her year...Claire went Leeds .... both cities are good student cities :) ....anyway nice pic Pat !

@phil_howcroft Interesting Phil...we did like Birmingham very much.....your Kirsty was probably in one of the other halls as the one we looked at was all medically based....we never got to know how far away the other parts of the uni where ...should have asked as this was the one thing Lydia didn't like that it was all a similar based subject.

Very important message.
Good luck to Lydia and I know she will make the best decision.

Exciting times - my dad's from Birmingham. I don't know it really, but I've heard it got lots going for it as a city.
