Dry stone wall by happypat

Dry stone wall

The craft of dry stone walling is very much alive in the north of England but I have never seen a better example than this one which was being built at the Westmorland Show.
Built straight onto the land with no foundations there are many miles of these wonderful walls separating fields in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cumbria, Westmorland & Northumberland.
Loved this impressive wave effect, such talent! This was all built in the day by men of great skill.

I would liked to have got a photo of more of this wall but had to get close to show the work without anyone standing in front of it!

We are out tonight so no need to comment, I will check your photos out tomorrow.

Three good things:
1. A lovely Skype with Max & Finn this morning.
2. A visit to the fabric shop helping my friend choose curtain material. I bought some red check PVC table cover ready for my change to winter colours as soon as it gets cooler.
3. A better night with the wool pillow so the jury's still out. Harry loved his though!
Beautiful craftsmanship

Amazing. I've seen lots of demonstrations but this is much the best. Must be difficult to do.

This is great. I saw a similar dry built brick wall in Beijing several different places, but not with stone.

I love seeing the results of these craftsmen and often take photos of old stone walls covered in moss etc.

Love the stone walls and there is a lot up north near where my sister lives but most are crumbling.. such a shame .. we need some of your craftsmen over here.
Bit sad having to get ready for winter.

So many stones go into this work of great skill! They must be around in the area. Will be there for centuries!

Very impressive wall. David being an engineer decided to build a small dry stone wall around a flower bed in our garden in Cyprus it looked really good.

Very impressive wall - love the wave effect. The wave was someone having fun with his craft knowing that people would appreciate his creativity.

I was telling my son about this picture and how clever the 'curve' was. Turns out his boss from Muncaster was involved. Coincidentally his boss is the man in green on the right of your photo!

What a wonderful skill. Of course drystone walls are so important ecologically too ... microhabitats for creepy crawlies! Interesting capture!

This is beautiful and so interesting with the circular design built in. The men are certainly masters of their craft.
