I treated myself to this lovely book today, as you see it starts from the 1st November but you could read it anytime in the winter really.
Packed full of lovely descriptions, winter recipes, stories etc.
Called The Christmas Chronicles it's just up my street!
To read by the fire with a glass of something good.
On the fly leaf it says:
For James
Who once told me 'you can grow old, just make sure you never grow up'
Three good things:
1. Sock on, warm feet.
2. The electric has just gone off for the second time today but came on two mins ago so all my writing saved!
3. Cathy & Lydia coming for their tea!
4. Just had to add this! Under 1st November Nigel has written a drink recipe from fruit out of the store cupboard & writes
'I also include uses for the fruits that remain after the liquor has been drunk. Fat alcohol-soaked little fruits, each one pissed as a newt, that can be served as a desert......'
What more do you want?
What a delightful book from the sounds of it and reading the 1st two paragraphs , Nigel Slater is a lovely gentle soul who uses such wonderful turn of phrases in his writing and his cookery programs . A wonderful book to dip into in front of a roaring fire or your Aga on a winters evening ! -- Nice to treat oneself sometimes !
I've never seen a pissed newt! But its a favourite saying, isn't it! He looks as if he is a good writer - interesting and humorous. I'll have to watch out for that book! Its $20 on Kindle!
@maggiemae Ooh proper price here is £26 but I got it off Amazon for £10 something. It's really too nice a book to but on kindle, the illustrations won't be good & it's a thick book with lovely binding. Try Book Depository, cathy uses that lots to send books to NZ.
Sounds like a great book ... I just googled Nigel to see if he was one of the UK cooks that I have seen and yes I have .. and enjoyed his recipes and style... like the sound of the fruit .. I have a bit of a fettish for recipe books Annabelle Langbein (NZ) is one of my favourite .. you should check out her books when you are here though I am sure they would be available in the UK
@julzmaioro I have one of hers Julz, daughter in law bought me it & she included the measuring scoops! The Free Range Cook. Only thing I find that hers are very summery recipes which are lovely but seeing as we don't seem to get many hot weeks it's a bit summery for the UK! Sad isn't it!
@beryl Thanks Beryl, I cud think it might be your kind if book. I love Nigel Slater too. Very tidy worker & he makes life seem so simple & wholesome somehow. A great book for a winter person!
Loved all the fun in comments!!
