This is the beach we travelled 735 miles to see last week!
As a child my dad drove us every year up to Scotland, along the road to the Isles & believe me in those days it was a venturous journey. Narrow with passing places, he had to back up lots of times on the sides of lochs.
Once the caravan came unhitched & rolled down a hill luckily coming to a stop beside a bank.
Every year we stayed for three weeks on the Portnadoran caravan site between Arisaig & Morar.
The same families went each year & us kids had a fantastic time roaming wherever we felt like.
This is the beach belonging to the caravan site itself. Hours & hours we spent here making sand dens, learning to float, climbing the rocks as the tide came in, a perfect holiday place!
Was so surprised to see how small it was! Looks beautiful when the tide comes in round the rocks. Out to the right are the islands of Sky, Rum & Eigg.
Portnadoran is Gaelic for Bay of Otters.
A little different these days with electric hook ups & holiday lets. No gas lamp trimming!! It used to be just caravans & tents in my day.
I haven't been back for sixty years so a real nostalgic trip!
Three good things:
1. Happy memories.
2. Harry is spraying all the green algae on the paths, so much this year with all the rain.
3. Sock time!
So lovely to go back in time to favourite places of childhood and all those memories -- and the little boat is still waiting for you !! "When the boat comes in " !! Pat . So Harry has been busy -- Gary did a similar job at the end of last week -- he sprayed all the pavers , paths and drives to kill all the weeds and algae growing in between them ! He needs to give the lawns their last mow and give them their winter feed !
@beryl Yes same here Beryl. A last tidy up before it's too cold. We even have a bit of agea on our fairly newly painted lower outside house walls, he sprayed them rptoo! Cost us lots of money painting house so was not happy to see that!
That's very special after so many years. Oh the trials of single roads with passing places stick in the mind for a long time!!!
I used to have nightmares about one particular stretch of road on our trip to the Western Isles. But other stories can be special memories.
Green algae a bother here too though I poured a packet of Ariel washing powder over one part and it killed off a lot of it!!!
Looks quite wild and beautiful! Your early caravan adventures sound the same as ours - though my lawyer father was not practical at all and would summon help from anyone around. We three daughters were so embarrassed we would hide on the floor of the old car!
@maggiemae Ha ha Maggie, sounds familiar! I hated being turfed out in the rain while my parents got up, we couldn't have our breakfast as the we're lying on the table bit! Happy caravaning!
It looks an idyllic spot for kids to play during the summer holidays. Glad it brought back memories. It is strange how everything seems smaller once you go back doesn't it. David and I did a nostalgic journey to our places of birth before we came to Australia and when I went to see Amberley, the house where I was born, it was so much smaller than I remembered it as a 4 year old when we left that home in Yorkshire and moved to Lancashire.
Oh, Pat...what a wonderful trip filled with delightful childhood memories. I can clearly imagine you having a magical time there. A perfect image to illustrate the nostalgia. Love this post.
Lots of happy memories, Pat.
Thank you all for loving & faving my beach too!
