I took this on the way home from my dad's house yesterday, early evening. We are getting a spell of glorious weather in the north-east of Scotland - 19 degrees of sunshine in March, unheard of, almost! This is the old bridge of Dee at Invercauld, near Balmoral Castle. It is here that Charles and Diana posed in 1981. Those iconic honeymoon photographs of him in the kilt and her in a gorgeous brown tweed outfit. Both of them looked to be in love. Little did we know. And how could anyone have predicted the traumatic end of their marriage and the tragic end of her life.
@randystreat Oh, yes, even the 'new' bridge of Dee isn't modern. The bridge in this image was built in 1752, and closed in 1859 - when the 'new' and current bridge over the river was built. The old bridge is still passable, but only on foot, and is generally used for access to walks in the hills beyond. However, it came in very handy, and was used in earnest for a only last year when the current bridge was damaged by flooding. As it is the only access route to Braemar from the east, people wishing to enter the village had to drive to the bridge, leave their cars, walk across the old bridge and take a shuttle bus the rest of the way. Fortunately that situation only lasted about a week - just the time to get the current bridge checked and repaired!
What a beautiful view! I didn't expect to see mountains! When one thinks back on Charles and DIana, we can help but to think of the star-crossed milestones! An historic tragedy!
Beautiful scene and narrative Issi!
