We arrived alive! by jamibann

We arrived alive!

Although only just ... we may only have had a very short distance to go to reach the bothy when we arrived at the river, but we still had to cross, which should have been easy (on the stepping stones), but with all the rain, the river was in spate. There was no way round, nowhere else to go and no phone signal. We were very aware of our heavy rucksacks, so we undid the chest and waist clips (just in case) and chose the shallowest looking option, where the river was widest. We opted (probably wrongly) not to remove clothing. We ended up in waist deep water, with a strong current. I ended up 3/4 of the way across, not able to go further because we were struggling with the current and just fighting to maintain our position in the water. Fortunately, John got over to the other side, dumped his rucksack and came back in to help us. I have never been so relieved to get to the other side of a river. It was definitely touch and go, and we could well have ended up in the sea loch. Afterwards we laughed and swore and laughed again. Our friend asked us 'not to tell his wife'! Soaked to the skin, we walked around the corner to the bothy. Once inside, dry clothes were the first thing on everyone's mind. A close call, and a lesson learned. A Friday the 13th we'll not forget in a hurry!
Oh my what a scary time for everyone. Glad you all made it safely to the other side. I must say your story reminded me of the famous children's story, We're going on a bear hunt - 'We can't go over it, we can't go under it - OH NO, we have to go through it!

Gracious me you do have an adventurous life! The currants can be so strong it was a wonder you stayed upright…you aren’t exactly carrying much weight! That rock looks quite menacing too! Like a big oversized tyre!!

Glad you are safe - and hopefully warm and dry. Definitely not an experience that you will forget in a hurry.

Oh my that sounds quite terrifying but I'm glad you all made it across the river safely and got warm and dry. The rock face there looks quite foreboding just to add to the Friday 13th vibe!

How exciting! Rushing water can appear so innocuous, yet turn out to be so terrifying. I’m sure I would have needed fresh undies as well as dry clothes. Haha. Glad you’re alive and well! 🙂❤️

Lovely photo - great adventure - but do take care with swift flowing creeks.

@busylady It was one of those very scary moments. I was more than relieved to arrive at the other side. My biggest concern was our friend as he was more unstable on his feet than I'd expected and I needed to stay with him. A lesson learned in many ways.

@jeneurell Oh, yes, lesson learned!

Oh....what a challenging expedition. So glad you all reached safety.....you will not forget the experience....definitely need a book now.
But you can really understand how easily things can go wrong in these remote parts.

Oh, you've had some really tough times. A great adventure to remember in the warmth of the fireplace. I was reminded of my adventures and this call: "just don't tell my wife anything".
