Does anyone remember?

Does anyone remember what these are, let alone how to use them?
If I read the sign properly this is a free phone provided by the country’s biggest Telco to call anywhere in Australia.
The man using his mobile and walking beside the phone booth was a bonus for the photo!!!

I only ever used one of these once. I remember the smell of stale cigarette smoke now. I like to see them still around though. Ours weren’t free though!
