A Bit of Old Rope

In this terrible weather we are having to grab a photograph where we can. This piece of old rope has been in my Sisters old apple tree for years.

Why it's there I don't know, but it looked well weathered in some places but quite health in others. Parts have disappeared into the growing bark. Love to know what it was for, unfortunately she won't be able to tell me.
