A Church on High by ladymagpie

A Church on High

High above the valleys is the village of Amberley where there has been a church since Norman times (1020-1204). The villagers walked across the high common land to worship.

In the early 1800's it was decided that a new place of worship was needed and Trinity Church was completed in 1836 thanks to the generosity of a David Ricardo Esq. of Gatcombe Park, now lived in by the Queen's Daughter, Princess Anne.

The hill was excavated so that the building could stand, according to good biblical teaching, on the rock. It has one of the most beautiful graveyards that I have seen.
