Posting early again due to working on a football match this afternoon. This may look like an ordinary building but it has history, this similar history can be found all over the UK.
I've told you about the old railway line that today is a lovely 6 mile cycle track and used by many by walkers as well. Today I'm at the far end of the track in the town of Nailsworth, in fact just below my Forest Green Rovers stadium.
Most towns and city, where there was a railway, had a hotel nearby, and this one is just 100 yards away from the old Nailsworth Station, the end of the line and never increased south.
This building was built in 1810 and was a private house called Corunna House, named after the battle of Corunna in a battle during the peninsular war where the British helped to prevent Napoleon occupying Spain and Portugal.
It’s believed that the property ceased to be a private house in 1841, and became a truck and bus stop with the little building on the left being a waiting room, it also housed the town hearse.
By 1914 it became the Railway Inn and in 1932 it changed to the Railway Hotel, welcoming travellers from the railway station. The last passenger train was in 1947 with the line completely closing by 1966. Since then it had been rented out as flats but today it's been converted into luxury apartments.
The Railway Hotel sign was painted on the building to the front, and one side in 1932, it has last well but may have been restored at one time. So look closely at your own station and see if there is an old Railway Hotel nearby.
A very no nonsense building. Glad it’s now got a use & a smart one at that! Lovely that they kept the original signage. My SIL has an uncle who lives in Nailsworth or is it Stroud….house called something to do with Walnuts.
Yep, my town has a railway hotel, about 200 metres from the railway station (that's no longer used as the train lines here are all closed up). A lovely looking building & fab shot
