Over the last month or two I showed you various parts of the Stroud Valleys. I have concentrated on the Mills, Canal and the Cycle Track. Well today it is the cycle track again but this time I've travelled to the far end away from my home, and into the town of Nailsworth.
This was the end of the 5 mile railway built in 1867, but that wasn't meant to be the case as it was planned to travel south towards Tetbury and into the county of Wiltshire and the towns of Malmesbury and Chippenham. They would then connect with the GWR of London to Bristol, unfortunately the money ran out and that section was shelved.
This is a beautiful start for a walk as the old railway line travels through this wood, with the Cotswold Hills off to your right and the Nailsworth River running parallel to the track and down the bank on the left. A few years ago I crossed the river just at this point by balancing on some wobbly stones and logs, my family would have killed me if they found out I did this on my own. I just wanted to get on a small island where a geocache was hidden, I was so pleased to have found it then realised I had to wobble myself back across the river.
The peace and quiet here is beautiful, with just the sound of the water and the wildlife in the trees. A few hundred yards further on, again on the left to come to a lovely mill pond where there are many water birds swimming around. This area is a heaven.
A very beautiful area Heather. I can see how quiet & peaceful it is…..they are always running out of money…..no Leeds hook up with HS2 now! Personally I think you have reprieved, this is better than a railway.
What doesn't one do for a geocache... 😆
