Not far from the town of Minchinhampton, you can find this unusual stone standing alone in a field. It stands about 7.5 feet tall and is made of limestone, it’s also covered in lichen and peppered with holes.
One of the stories that come with this stone is that Mothers brought their sick babies here from the nearby town with the belief that passing the child through one of the holes will cure it of illnesses, such as measles and whooping cough.
It comes from the late Neolithic age and was thought to be a topping stones to a tomb, whatever it is; it also has a life of its own. They have tried to move it by various methods, but it just won't move. That's strange as it's also said that at midnight it runs around the field on its own before returning to its position.
Well it may come from the same period as Stonehenge, and have some strange habits, but it has a good neighbour that may also have some strange habits. The Queens daughter Princes Anne lives in Gatcombe Park on the other side of the road.
What a fascinating story….it looks like a large pumice stone to me….how wonderful it would be to see it running round the fields at midnight! Camp out Heather!
