Where is one of the best landmarks around our valleys, known as The Butterow Gate Toll House. I love this building which was built in 1825 to take toll money from passing traffic travelling down the hill into the main town of Stroud.
When I say traffic I mean horse and cart, or horse and carriage and even animals going down to various markets. It was run by a landowner trust with the Clerk having a wonderful name of Wilberforce Heelas. There was no other way of getting pass without paying and you will note the angled walls so that the toll man could look up and down the hill from inside.
You can see a board above the door with all the charges, such as “For every horse or beast drawing any coach, stage coach, Post Chaise etc was 3P. They must have made some good money. Originally the building was a 1 up and 1 down room only but some attachments have now been added.
In the 1950's and 60's I remember it as a little shop, but today it's a holiday rental home with great views and walks. It will only cost you £609 per week and you can see what you get here:
Oh my!!! I'm in awe. This is a terrific building. I love the shapes i can see in it.
And the interior... oh brother... i could get used to living in there. This is SPLENDOUR!
If you allow me, i will draw from your photo. If you don't, I'll draw it anyway, but perhaps from the photo in that link. (But i like the more dynamic angle in your photo).
A brilliant historic building Heather. Very quaint & an interesting post, thank you. We have a toll bridge just a walk down the road from us on the Cartford Bridge but just an ordinary house, nothing as pretty as this. It costs 50p for a car.
for 609 pounds a week, i'll take it for a month, as long as there's moving water and a flushing toilet, i'll be good with that price. the interior is simply but elegantly decorated as per the photos. your shot, though, has more character than the one presented in the link. aces!
